7/10/1945 - 11:30 - Eight(8) P-51's bomb Kanchow and offensive recon of area.
    75th pilots: Capt. Eugene J. McGuire, Lts. Francis L. Bailey, Frank E. Epperson, Hall F. King, Thomas L. McDonough, Gales P. Perry, Ora E. Sievers, and Charles L. Vayo.
    Capt. McGuire led mission.
    Staged out of Laohwangping.
No activity was noted at the town of Kanchow, the airfield nor on the road for 20 miles. Bombed and dropped external drop tanks on area north from Kanchow damaging 10 buildings. Strafed and damaged 15 buildings, burned 5 sampans and damaged 30 more. Fairly large fires were burning when the planes left the area. No activity was noted around Hengyang or the airfield. The airfield appeared to be in good shape. The by-pass bridge at the east end of town was operational.

7/19/1945 - 0935 - One(1) P-51 recon and radar check to Pinglo and Kweilin.
     Staged out of Luichow.
     Capt. McGuire flew mission.
At Pinglo and Kweilin he contacted Limelight at 11,000 feet and flew the directed course to test the radar facilities. Capt. McGuire observed no activity on the road from Pinglo to Kweilin, but the road was in good shape. Several buildings were burning on Krhtong Field and several craters were seen on both Krhtong and Yang Tong airfields.

7/24/1945 - 0830 - Four(4) P-51's offensive recon of river from Kukong to Yingtak.
    75th pilots: Capt. Eugene J. McGuire, Lts. Frederick Grabber, Richard M. York, and Samuel Pesacreta.
    
Staged out of Luichow.
    Capt. McGuire led mission.
About 10 miles north of Kukong, 4 clusters of frags were dropped on 12 camoflaged junks with good hits. The junks were strafed and are claimed as damaged. In same area, 8 loaded sampans were fragged and strafed. North of Kukong in the Shakowyu area, 1 sampan loaded with gasoline was destroyed and 1 junk and 10 sampans were damaged.

7/26/1945 - 1125 - Four(4) P-51's Primary - offensive recon Samshui to Tsingyun. Secondary - recon railroad Canton to Yungching.
    75th pilots: Capt. Eugene J. McGuire, Lts. Meredith L. Hill, Julian M. Kidwell, and Arthur P. Sheehan.
     Staged out of Luichow.
     Capt. McGuire led mission.
At Samshui 2 planes dropped 4 external gas tanks loaded with 25 gals. gasoline on 6 barges. Two tanks overshot, but two scored hits. Strafed and set fire to 2 barges, 2 more barges caught fire and remaining 2 barges damaged by strafing. Just north of Samshui, 3 trucks were strafed, destroying one and damaging two. Further north, approximatly 40 sampans were damaged. No activity was observed on the railroad from Canton North.

7/28/1945 - 0615 - Four(4) P-51's offensive recon Kukong area.
    75th pilots: Capts. Eugene J. McGuire, Donald L. Rodewald, Lts. Frederick Grabber, and Samuel Pesacreta.
     Staged out of Luichow.
     Capt. McGuire led mission.
In the vicinity of MaPa, 1 truck and one passenger car were damaged. Ten miles north of Kukong, 16 junks loaded with gasoline were destroyed with secondary explosions sending smoke up to 4,000 feet. Thirteen other junks were damaged. With all ammunition expended, the planes returned to base.

7/30/1945 - 0605 - Three(3) P-51's offensive recon of railroad and river from Kukong to Ichang.
    75th pilots: Capt. Eugene J. McGuire, Lts. Frederick Grabber, and Samuel Pesacreta.
     Staged out of Luichow.
     Capt. McGuire led mission.
Capt. McGuire fired 2 rockets at 2 large sampans north of Kukong but they fell short. Strafing damaged both sampans. At Lokchong, Lt. Pesacreta dropped his parafrags on 2 boxcars which appeared operative, claiming both as damaged. There were about 150 RR cars of all kinds in the Lokchong vicinity but all appeared burned out. At tunnel #64, Capt. McGuire fired 3 rockets into the entrance, but only one entered the tunnel. The sixth rocket was fired at bridge #65 but it fell short. Two locomotives and 4 freight cars, which were burned out, were seen SE of Pingshek. On the river north of Kukong, strafed and damaged 6 sampans. There was no activity on the river or RR in the area covered.

8/6/1945 - First Atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima Japan. (Little Boy)

8/9/1945 - Second Atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki Japan. (Fat Man)

8/14/1945 - 1200 - Four (4) P-51's attack Ground-Radio targets south of Limkong (request by Larkspur).
    75th Pilots: Maj. Clyde B. Slocumb, Capt. Eugene J. McGuire, Lts. George E. Hilbarger and Frank C. Liddell.
     Staged out of Liuchow.
     Maj. Slocumb led meission.
Flight was unable to contact Larkspur so it continued on to Ft. Bayard. Attacked 3 trucks with parafrag clusters and rockets. One rocket scored a direct hit destroying 1 truck and damaging 2 more. Stafed fortified positions on a hill just south of Suikai with unknown results.

8/15/1945 - Cessation of hostilities. V-J Day!

8/20/1945 - 0730 - Five(5) P-51's reconnaissance to Banton-Hongkong area.
    Hqs pilot: Col. Gaines;
    75th pilots: Capt. Eugene J. McGuire, Lts. Francis L. Bailey, Robert F. Ebner and William N. Walterman.
     Staged out of Liuchow.
     Capt. McGuire led meission.
An attempt was made to contact the C-47 that had landed at White Cloud the day before but it had left before the Mustangs arrived. All planes returned safely to base.

8/30/1945 - 0930 - Two (2) P-51's reconnaissance Luichow to Hengyang to Yingtak.
    75th pilots: Capt. Eugene J. McGuire and F/O Donald K. Miller.
     Staged out of Liuchow.
     Capt. McGuire led meission.
Airfield at Hengyang operational. No unusual activity noted and planes landed safley at Liuchow.

Inactivate Air Group

 FORT LEWIS, Jan. 7. - AP - The 23rd Fighter Group, which was formed in China from the famed Flying Tigers and arrived on home soil last week, exists now only on paper.
 The group was inactivated at midnight Saturday, the northeast Fort Lewis staging facility announced today. The headquarters and headquarters squad of the also famed 315th (Globe Trotters) air service group which served with the 23rd fighters in the 14th Air Force also were inactivated at the same time. The Globe Trotters served with the British Eighth army in Africa and rounded the world since the unit set out from Fort Dix, N. J., 40 months ago.
 The units inactivated as listed by Fort Lewis, are: 23rd Fighter Group, 74th (Guerilla) Fighter Squad, single engine; 75th (Flying Shark) Fighter Squad, single engine; 76th (Vanguard) Fighter squad, single engine; Headquarters and Headquarters squad of the 14th Air Service group; Headquarters and Headquarters squad of the 315th Air Service group; 1139th Quartermaster company, Air Service Group and the 1682nd Ordnance Supply and Maintenance company, avaiation.
